Erin’s guest hosts this week, is a woman who has been on the forefront of artistic innovation for fifty years. Her name is Jen Grey, also known as, Jen Zen. Jen Began her art journey at the age of 4 when she started writing and illustrating her first book. Jen created comics for the school paper, then took her first real job as a teenager through a company that allowed her to endeavor in a graphic design position, in the late 60’s. In college, Jen also pursued graphic design in college. Jen utilized her college to obtain new opportunities such as mixed media, conceptual art and much more. Jen then continued to graduate with her MFA.
As the obvious illustrates, Jen has an extensive background in the art industry. However, she also has been an educator for over for 50 years. She has helped students in many ways to not only teach them but help them recognize their successes and even reach some extraordinary success levels. Jen gives the audience some great insight on the history and current realms of the art world. This week’s episode, Erin Sparler dives into the important elements aligned with art galleries. The information received in this episode is not only beneficial, but it comes from someone who has a great deal of first hand knowledge on both art and how galleries operate. Curating manager of the famous Waldorf iconic and historic gallery in Asheville, NC, Erin Kellem shares a full synopsis on how she manages this large art gallery.
Waldorf Gallery was constructed in 1923, it holds over 170 artists artwork, and the gallery is 20,000 square foot. This is a substantially large and successful gallery. Erin Kellem originally obtained her degree in photography fine art and made a pivot to mixed media. Kellem shares her path to becoming the curating manager to this successful gallery. Kellem also discusses how they operate, manage, organize, and communicate with both artists and customers to maintain the successful reputation this gallery is known for. Former classmate and friend to Erin Sparler joins her this week to dive into the 3D art world. Casper De La Cruz attended the Academy of Art in San Francisco at the same time as Erin. Not only did they go to school together, but they also both majored in Computer Arts. Both Artists obtaining the same degree, reached success utilizing it through separate paths.
Casper now works for a small company called AV Design. This company designs 3D animation for consumers, one commonly known consumer their company creates for is, Lego. 3D Art has evolved and advanced in many ways over the years, where now you can create almost anything from animation art. Casper helps to identify the many specializations and options out there in animation and 3D art. The art world is unique because it can often have differing complexities and specifications depending what avenue an artist chooses to pursue. Author and Artist, Flora Bowley joins Erin Sparler this week to examine the art world through Flora’s eyes. Flora creates abstract and creative art, using mainly acrylic paint. She is the author of two informative books, and currently working on a third which contains a different spin than her previous two. Flora also has found passion in teaching both in person and online courses, as well as hosting workshops for artist all over.
